TPS 2026.1 STANDARD

The rules we use to measure your typing

The TPS 2026.1 Standard is our assessment method, based on the conventions used by professional typing assessments. We apply it the same way to every exam and in every language, and we publish it so anyone can check it.

Exam conditions

  • You type a fixed text, in the language you choose, on a physical keyboard.
  • Every exam has a fixed length, shown in your report.
  • The timer starts with your first keystroke. If you finish the text early, it stops right then.
  • Pasting and dragging text are blocked, and spell check and autocorrect are off. Your result reflects only what you type.

How we measure speed and accuracy

WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100

  • Speed in words per minute (WPM): every 5 correct characters, spaces included, count as one word.
  • We also give it in keystrokes per minute, counting every correct character: 1 word equals 5 keystrokes.
  • Accuracy compares every character you type with the one in the text, in the same position.
  • Mistakes never add speed, and what you do not reach is not counted as a mistake.
  • If you fix a mistake in time, it counts as correct. The correction is noted in your report.

The four levels

LevelSpeedMinimum accuracy
BeginnerUnder 25 WPMAny
Intermediate25–44 WPM80%
Advanced45–64 WPM90%
Expert65 WPM or more95%

Speed sets your level and accuracy caps it. If your accuracy does not reach a level's minimum, you stay at the level your accuracy allows. A fast exam with many mistakes is never Expert.

When you pass and when the result is valid

  • You pass with at least 15 WPM and 80% accuracy.
  • We only issue a certificate for a passed exam.
  • A speed above 220 WPM is not accepted, because it cannot be reached typing by hand.
  • The keystroke log must rebuild the submitted text exactly. If it does not, the result is not valid.
  • If you do not pass, you can retake the exam for free.

What the certificate shows and how it is verified

  • Your name, your speed in words and keystrokes per minute, your accuracy, your level, the exam language and the date of issue.
  • Your mistakes do not appear on the certificate: they stay in your private report.
  • Every certificate has a unique ID and a QR code. Any employer can check it on our verification page.

What it is based on

We follow the usual conventions

  • The standard 5-character word.
  • Net speed: only what you type correctly counts.
  • Character-by-character accuracy.
  • A fixed text and a timed exam.

And we add

  • A log of every keystroke, to check the result matches what you typed.
  • A certificate anyone can verify with its ID or QR code.
  • The same rules and levels in 27 languages.
